The atolls and their tourist islands

The Maldives are coral islands, which mean that they are only about 1-2 meters over sea-level. There are neither mountains nor valleys, nor rivers. The flat islands have coconut palms and tropical plants and are surrounded by a white shining coral sandy beach. Offshore the coast there is the shining lagoon with crystal clear turquoise water. Sometimes it is only 1 – 1, 5 meters deep, but has always between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius. The ground of the lagoon rises slowly towards the open sea. It is first covered by single coral blocks and then by a full covering coral formation (take your bathing shoes!). Its` highest level is the reef ledge which can often be seen when low tide. Behind the ledge the ground plunges down. Canals were beaten through the reef ledge, so that boats can reach the islands. Due to low and high tide sea level can vary about 1 meter.

The offer of the island

The holiday islands seem to be like Robinson islands, due to the romantic mixture of natural nativeness and friendly looking bungalows. Besides the bungalows, hotels generally have a reception, restaurant, coffee shop (sometimes 24 hours service), bar (also offering alcoholic drinks), boutique. Electricity station (220 V / 50 Hz) and sea water desalination are standard now days.

Nearly all islands have diving stations or diving clubs, where you can register for a diving course. A previous medical check is obligatory. On most islands you have the possibility to do wind surfing, sailing, water skiing, riding motorboat or night fishing. There are also courses for this kind of sports.
Trips to Male or other (in-) habitant islands (island hopping) is a very popular activity to do.
Apart from that it is he tourists` choice if the rather like to discover the island alone on land or in group from under water. They can walk around it, which may take not longer than 10 minutes, depending on the island.

When travelling to the Maldives you should bring diver eyeglasses and a snorkel. Even if you have never used these items before, you should do it. You will discover a huge aquarium with many kinds of corals, tropical fishes and sea animals – you will never forget it. This underwater world is unique in the whole world.
